Fredrik Karpe's carries out genetic epidemiological research studying human metabolism to understand the complications of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

He initiated the Oxford Biobank for prospective genetic epidemiological research. The aim is to study human lipid and carbohydrate metabolism using integrative physiological and genomic approaches to understand the complications of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Fredrik is also assessing the metabolic effects of short-term high-fat and high-carbohydrate diets, following changes in gene expression and linking them to alterations in metabolic control. Dr Leanne Hodson, BHF Intermediate Fellow, working in the research group, is also an expert on biomarkers used to monitor dietary fat intake.
