Javier is interested in developmental genetics in plants, using the process of lateral growth of stems and roots as a model system to understand how plants grow and shape their structures.

The practical application of his research is to improve our capacity for predicting and ensuring plant biomass yields for food security in the future, specially in geographical areas that are already food insecure.

He is studying the root of Cassava to develop new varieties with enhanced ability for starch accumulation, with the view of meeting our future food requirements in areas such as sub-Saharan Africa or Latin America, where Cassava is the major source of calories in people's diet.

In addition, his lab studies fundamental developmental genetics in the model system Arabidopsis thaliana with the aim of transferring basic knowledge to Cassava.
