Qhelile Nyathi's current research is on agricultural insurance, looking at the effect of individual agricultural insurance on informal risk-sharing within smallholder farmers' networks. She conducted her field work in Tigray, Ethiopia.

More broadly, she is interested in agricultural investment in Africa, with a focus on environmental sustainability and finance. She is interested in learning how the private and public sector can best engage for smallholder farmers' financial resilience and food security.
