The Oxford Martin Programme on the Future of Food, with the Oxford Martin School, is recruiting a research assistant to join a team producing policy-relevant reviews of the natural science evidence base in contested subjects. These reviews – called “Evidence Restatements” - are a new format of scientific paper summarising the scientific literature relevant to a contentious policy debate. Early topics have covered the control of bovine TB (including the effects of badger culling) and whether insecticides are responsible for pollinator declines.

Some five years ago Sir John Beddington, Senior Adviser at the Oxford Martin School, raised the concept of 'The Perfect Storm' in which the issues of food, water and energy security needed to be addressed at the same time as mitigating and adapting to climate change. In this seminar he highlights changes that have occurred since then and the progress made and challenges that are currently faced.

Oxford Martin School Seminar series: Health in the 21st century: what’s new?

The Oxford Martin School's Michaelmas Term seminar series will examine the frontiers of technology and ideas in healthcare in the 21st century. 

Health and wellbeing concerns us all, but how is medical care changing and how does it affect us? What new ideas and technology are out there to take better care of us? Does where you live matter? What can we do to extend the quality and length of our lives?

Non-fat, low-fat, saturated fat, trans fats, healthy fats - in an era where we seem to be constantly bombarded with often conflicting messages about our diets, is all this information actually making us any healthier? How can we cut through media hysteria and make wise choices about the food we eat, and what impact do our consumption habits have, not just on our own health but that of the planet?

Challenges of the early 21st century

Speaker: Professor Sir John Beddington CMG FRS, Senior Adviser, Oxford Martin School and Professor of Natural Resources Management, University of Oxford

The latter half of the 20th century was a period of massive population growth, significant poverty, the over exploitation of natural resources and substantial pollution including greenhouse gas emissions . The related challenges posed in the early decades of the 21st century are in many ways inexorable and complicated by economic, social demographic and environmental change. This talk will focus on these challenges and some of the ways they may be addressed.

Professor Sir John Beddington will give a seminar in the Large Lecture Theatre on Monday 2 June (12.15 – 1.00pm) titled “Challenges of the early 21st century”. The seminar will be hosted by Head of Department, Liam Dolan, a Director of the Oxford Martin Plants for the 21st Century Institute.

Between January 2008 and the end of March 2013, Sir John was the Government Chief Scientific Adviser and Head of the Government Office for Science, reporting directly to the Prime Minister. Currently he is Senior Adviser, Oxford Martin School
